What Exactly Is Edge Computing?

- Jan 16, 2019 -

Edge computing can be seen as a miniature data center that can process or store key data locally and push all received data to a central data center or cloud storage. It can be said that edge computing extends the ability of cloud to the industrial field, collects, cleans and organizes data through local computing equipment, and then transmits it to the cloud.

In most cases, most of the data information will exist in the cloud. As a complement to cloud computing, edge devices greatly improve the efficiency of Internet of Things devices connecting to the cloud. Edge computing classifies data locally, so some of them are processed locally, which reduces the capacity of central storage. Often, IoT devices transmit data to local computing devices, where data is processed at the edge and then part of it is sent to the company data center.

Edge computing can reduce network latency, because data does not need to be transferred to the data center or cloud through the network for processing. This is particularly important for industries with high time requirements. For example, in manufacturing industry, millisecond delay may not be able to maintain the normal operation of the machine. Industrial automation production lines need real-time data acquisition and immediate feedback processing.
